Jimmy Buffett – Buffet Hotel – (Mailboat)
A new album from Jimmy Buffett is always reason for parrotheads to rejoice. Buffett’s incredible success has been built on his “summer job theory” – record and release a record during the winter months and set it up as the theme to your sold-out concerts for June, July, and August of each year. The results have served him well, culturally, artistically and financially. His latest endeavor, Buffet Hotel, is no exception.
His musical strategy is apparent on “Big Top,” where he states that “Just like Santa, I come around once a year/Time to break out all of your party gear.” To ensure the Buffett-vibe continues, you have him revisiting some familiar territory, a ‘beachy-keen’ place of flip flops, swimming pools, tattoos, surfing and, of course, a cold one or three. Fans will welcome this familiar tableau. This tried and true combination is comfortable, like a well-worn pair of sneakers.
For the newcomers, there are some pleasures to be discovered. “A Lot to Drink About,” a current-events recounting, will have you smiling and nodding your head in agreement, while “Buffet Hotel” reveals that this guy can still write a compelling song. Buffett’s an excellent craftsman. The music is pleasant, especially after you toss back a couple frosty mixed drinks.
Between all of his various enterprises – whether it be from restaurants, barbeques, blenders, or music – the Jimmy Buffett empire is worth something around 300 million dollars annually. Not bad for a summer job – and it certainly beats mowing lawns!
Buffett played at the Main Point, ostensibly as an up-and-coming Country act, four seperate times between 1974 – 1976. It is unknown, but highly unlikely, that any Parrotheads were in attendance.
