Patty Griffin – Downtown Church – (Credential)
Singer-songwriter Patty Griffin has kept the music industry on its toes. Her songwriting is consistently stellar and her songs have been covered by everyone from Jessica Simpson to Solomon Burke. Her own recordings indicate a talent with a unique position in the music world: a musician equally accepted by mainstream and alt-country fans alike.
Griffin’s Downtown Church is a collection of Gospel-infused songs produced by longtime friend, band-mate, and acclaimed producer Buddy Miller at the Downtown Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN. Downtown Church brings to life Gospel songs that have influenced contemporary music in a way that only Patty Griffin can do. Griffin is well suited for the gospel feel. Her voice has a depth and warm southern twang that adds a level of introspective gravitas to the tunes. A track like “Wade In the Water” benefits immensely from her soulful vocal style. Covering tunes from the tradition as well as Hank Williams, Big Mama Thornton, and even St. Francis of Assisi, the flame-haired Austin diva stretches into unfamiliar territory. Belying her Yankee roots, Griffin belts and croons like a Texas blues mama on the familiar “Wade in the Water” and the obscure “I Smell a Rat.” There’s also traditional church fare like the solemn set closer “All Creatures of Our God and King.”
A natural songbird that can hush an audience with her performances, Patty Griffin’s power is in her passionate storytelling with a voice that is mournful yet uplifting.
