Ellis Paul – The Day After Everything Changed – (Black Wolf)
If you have not been listening to the music of Ellis Paul over the last fifteen-plus years, then this is the year to make that change. His latest CD is a stunning collection of work by one of the most literate songwriters in recent years.
From the driving energy of “Annalee” to the passionate love of a life and a city gone missing in “Hurricane Angel”, first love remembered in “Once Upon A Summertime” to love lost forever in “Nothing Left To Take,” Paul’s music and lyrics paint as broad a picture of life as possible. He’s ventured into some new territory by featuring a covers medley for the first time on a solo studio album with Patsy Cline’s “Walking After Midnight” paired with Sam Baker’s “Change.” While Paul does a lion’s share of the writing here, five of the songs are co-written with long time friend Kristian Bush from the band Sugarland who also produced this set.
Even after more than a dozen albums, he is not only at the top of his game but he continues to surprise and delight with his music.
