Randy Newman – Main Point alum – Wins an Academy Award for Best Original Song
Randy Newman received an Oscar in the Best Original Song category for “We Belong Together,” the piano-rock song he penned for Pixar’s Toy Story 3 at the 83rd annual Academy Awards.
It was Newman’s twentieth nomination for Best Original Song–and only his second win.
“My percentages aren’t great,” he quipped in his acceptance speech.
Of course, Main Pointers know Newman’s work well… He appeared at the Main Point on three separate occasions for a total of eleven nights spent in Bryn Mawr. He first played there September 24-27, 1970 with the opening act Manhattan Transfer. He also performed at the club with opener Ralph McTell October 14-17, 1971 and his final appearance was June 15-18, 1972 with Jim Croce serving as his opening act.
Newman, who previously took home a golden statuette for “I Didn’t Have You” from 2001′s Monsters, Inc., beat out “If I Rise” from the survival film 127 Hours, “I See the Light” from Rapunzel musical Tangled, and “Coming Home” from Country Strong.
Speaking with reporters after the ceremony, Newman said “We Belong Together” was “not the most consequential” piece of music he had written for a film, reported Billboard magazine. He cited his compositions forĀ The Natural, Ragtime, and Awakenings as worthier numbers.
Congrats Randy – Well done!
